Movie Review: Pwera Usog

Pwera Usog
Directed by: Jason Paul Laxamana
Warning: This post contain some spoilers.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, you should quickly run to the nearest cinema right away and get your ticket, because this film will make you jump out of your seat.

As a huge fan of horror films, Pwera Usog is one of the thrilling local movies I have seen. However, this is not your typical scare film, but rather it's a fun-thriller. A movie for the millennial who likes to have fun and loves a little thrill in their lives.

The actors who played their respective roles was obviously chosen carefully and each of them played their characters really well and obviously studied each of the characters they portrayed, but what caught my attention was the actress who played Luna, a personal close friend of mine, and ex PBB Housemate, Devon Seron. Her performance as a possessed young woman was beyond expectation. You will not see any hints of the Devon you usually see on TV or the other roles she had played in the previous years, this one is indeed very different and her role was difficult to portray. She definitely surprised everyone with her remarkable acting skills.

Devon Seron and Kiko Estrada

My only comment was, parts of the movie was a bit off, such as the fighting scene between Catalina (Eula Valedez and Inday Minda (Aiko Melendez) wherein it somehow looked like a watching a 90's Mortal Combat movie. There were also other silly scenes such as Jean (Andres), had to nilinlang Catalina (Valdez) to free Luna (Seron), resulting to chasing Jean (Andres) in the scene as if forgetting that they are in another dimension and she has powers.

And you know what make things even scarier? Not only that the abandoned building they shot at was listed as one of the most haunted places in the Philippines, but they cast and crew did experienced something creepy. In one of the scenes they shot at the rooftop, Devon almost fell off the building as they shoot the scene with her backing up step by step. The crew was screaming and shouting, telling her to stop, but she could not here them, her description was, it was as if her hearing was blocked off, she could only hear herself as she plays her role. But thankfully, she noticed it herself and stopped with only one more step before she really falls off the rooftop. Creepy right?

Here's the synopsis of the movie:

From L-R: Kiko Estrada, Cherise Castro, Devon Seron,
Sofia Andres and Joseph Marco
The theme of the film is about a Filipino superstition, "pwera usog", which means if someone (not everyone, the ones who are nakakausog) stares at you for too long whether it is a human being or an entity you'll get really sick and the only way for you to get better if that person wipes you on the forehead with their saliva.

The story revolves around a group of teens, Jean (Sofia Andres), Sherwin (Joseph Marco), Bobby (Albie Casino) and Val (Cherise Castro) who like to film pranks and post it on social media sites to gain attention and money. One day decided to go for a trip and ended up at an abandoned building where they met a crazy beggar, Luna (Devon Seron). The clique decided to play a little trick on her by scaring and pretending to kill her, but in the end to only give her 5,000 pesos. But what happened next was not what they expected. The beggar, Luna, ripped the money into pieces out of anger and fear, she began to act crazier than usual and ended up falling off the building and died. Since then the group has been seeing Luna (Seron) in almost everywhere and try to kill them one by one as a revenge of what they did to her. But as Jean (Andres) and Sherwin (Marco) went back to look for Luna (Seron) they had bumped into a young man, Quintin (Estrada) who apparently was Luna's (Seron) childhood orphan friend. And that's where Jean (Andres) and Sherwin (Marco) discovered that Luna (Seron) wasn't really a ghost but rather was possessed by an evil witch spirit who died many years ago, and was using Luna's (Seron) body to gain strength and access to the living world so she could rule it. Jean (Andres), Sherwin (Marco), and Quintin (Estrada) did their best to get back Luna's (Seron) body from the clutch of Catalina (Valdez) and end her terror.

Pwera Usog is still showing in cinemas nationwide and is now on its third week.
